Digital Nomad Visa in Brazil: rules, period of stay and how to apply!

What is the Digital Nomad Visa?
Accordingly to Brazilian law, the digital nomad visa is a temporary visa for those immigrants who, remotely and using information and communication technology, are able to carry out their work activities in Brazil for employers abroad. The definition is established as art. 1, §1, of Resolution Nº. 45 of 2021.
Which are the rules for obtaining a Brazilian Digital Nomad visa?
The rules for obtaining a Brazilian visa for digital nomads are:
- comply with the usual documentation for all temporary visas;
- prove the employment relationship with a foreign employer, through an employment contract, for example. It’s good, but not mandatory, that this contract covers the entire period for granting the digital nomad visa, which is 1 year, according to art. 3, single paragraph, of Resolution 45/2021;
- be able to carry out your work remotely for a foreign employer;
- and proof of monthly income in the amount of US$1,500 or bank funds in the amount of US$18,000.
For this, the following documents are required:
- Declaration by the applicant attesting to the ability to perform their professional activities remotely, through information and communication technologies;
- Employment or service contract or other documents that prove the link with a foreign employer; and
- Meaning proof of subsistence, from a foreign paying source, in an equal monthly amount or greater than US$ 1,500.00 (one thousand five hundred dollars) or availability of bank funds in the minimum amount of US$ 18,000.00 (eighteen thousand dollars).
How to get a Digital Nomad visa?
Firstly, to apply for a digital nomad visa, you must complete a visa application form through SCI/MRE, offered by the Ministry of Justice and Public Security.
Then, if the consulate or embassy has an electronic system, you must submit the documentation for the digital nomad visa to the e-consular for review. But if the consulate or embassy you are going to contact does not have an electronic system, you will need to check with them about how they perform the procedure. For example: sending an email, postal service, personal delivery, among others.
Especially, to be eligible for the digital nomad visa, you need to complete the requirements we mentioned above, according to Resolution Nº 45/2021, in addition to other requirements, that the concession evaluator may make.
Furthermore, the digital nomad residence permit can be made through MigranteWeb (in Portuguese). In addition, the foreigner may be called for a requirements analysis interview.

There are several countries that offer visas for digital nomads, as there is an increasingly deep interdependence and globalization between countries, imposing that the new work relationships are also in line with the current world. How much does it cost to get this type of visa?
The digital nomad visa cost may vary, but the values are:
- Amount of fees for the professional who will assist you: for example, a lawyer, with an amount varying according to the contracted firm;
- Consular costs to be paid to the Brazilian Consulate/Embassy: the amount varies according to the consulate;
- In the case of a residence permit (when the immigrant is already in Brazil) for a digital nomad: the fee of R$ 168.13 (updated on 07/2022).
Who can’t have a digital nomad visa in Brazil?
Can’t have the visa the foreigner who:
- doesn’t have an employment contract with a foreign employer;
- who can’t perform their function remotely;
- who do not have sufficient funds or monthly amounts as required by the law.
In addition, it’s important for you to know that if you work for a Brazilian employer, you aren’t a digital nomad. That is, you can’t apply for this visa! In this case, you must seek one of the visas to work in Brazil.
The foreigner will also not be entitled to this visa if he is in another condition, for another Visa. An example: retired.
